Ray's Rest Day - the route
23rd June 2020
The hearse will leave from Church Place (opposite the Church, literally) at 1pm and turn down Fenton Street (passing with the Seahorse on the left) and then right onto South Road (past the Royal Oak). We will continue on South Road and turn down Victoria Avenue. We will go all the way down Victoria Avenue until we reach the seafront. We will turn left onto West Drive and follow this road all the way around the esplanade and out of Porthcawl (the main road out is The Portway) towards the cemetery. There are a number of locations on West Drive, the Fairways hotel, the Atlantic and the Seabank hotel which we will pass.
For anyone wishing to line the streets near Church Place there is also the opportunity to move onto Victoria Avenue for when the hearse completes the loop past the Seahorse.
The service at the cemetery is unfortunately limited to a very small number of family members due to the virus. As much as it would be lovely to have people lining the road near the cemetery I feel it’s only fair to acknowledge that there is no parking at the cemetery and there is no car park nearby.
The cemetery is on a busy A-road with only one lane in each direction. As you can probably tell, I feel it will be difficult to line the route near the cemetery safely and we have been advised that the restrictions on numbers in the cemetery will be enforced.
The weather is set to be very hot on Thursday (sun cream, hats and water recommended!). Being a seaside town we anticipate it might be quite busy. There isn’t an abundance of parking in Porthcawl but there is some parking along the seafront and side roads. I’m aware that some of the larger car parks may be closed due to Covid restrictions. There is more information on Porthcawl car parks here: https://www.bridgend.gov.uk/residents/roads-transport-and-parking/car-parks/
The hearse will not be travelling as far as Rest Bay. Rest Bay is about a mile walk down to the Fairways hotel which is one of the first places on West Drive we will pass.
I wish circumstances were different and we could all be together at the service and wake, but our huge thanks to everyone making the trip on Thursday to line the streets and give dad his send off. It is overwhelming that so many people are travelling from far and wide to pay their respects to dad and, having already completed a couple of laps of the route, I feel it will be very emotional to see you all standing there for dad and for us. This is a deeply sad occasion for us all but we ask for smiles and waves as he goes past. Dad would want you to be celebrating his life which he without doubt lived to the full. I look forward to when we can all be together at his memory day and share our mutual love and respect for a man who will be forever missed. I will share the order of service on Facebook on the day.
With love and thanks from us all ❤️❤️❤️
P.S. Anyone travelling from afar to be here please get in touch ❤️
